Meet the team for 2016
Rob Edmonds, Founder
I love all outdoor sports in the wilderness, but my main passion in winter is ski mountaineering. Being brought up in Aviemore meant that, as a child, you either played our local game (shinty) or took up Alpine skiing; so, from the age of five, I’ve been on the planks! I’ve enjoyed all disciplines of skiing, but the big love is always ski mountaineering.
In the summer, it’s mountain biking, road biking and – in spite of my size – I enjoy trail running (or, in my case, jogging)! The Cairngorms National Park is a playground of fun.
Rob’s favourite bit of kit
Owning a shop means that you get to test loads of gear! Over the past 14 years of running Mountain Spirit, I’ve seen the quality of kit move on massively – so it’s hard to pick one bit of gear. If pushed, though, I’d say that the Dynafit ST 2.0 binding with the La Sportiva Spectre boot and the Dynastar Cham 97 skis are a rocking combination on the ski front; and the Haglofs Rando Active Shell jacket and pants work great for me.
Rob’s favourite cake
For those of you who know me – and being the trained athlete that I am – a bowl of dust and some sparkling water without the fizz is the way forward. For those of you who don’t know me, carrot cake all the way!
This would be a long list but – if it had to be narrowed down to just two – it would be mountain biking and ski touring. Nothing beats the enjoyment of the descents after putting all the hard work in on the ups. It also helps that we have a vast trail network in and around Aviemore. I am new to ski touring but from my first trip out last season, I fell in love with it.
Josh’s favourite bit of kit
I am currently loving the new MARKER Kingpin binding – it is super-easy to use and feels great to ski. Also a big fan of my Bergans of Norway kit; it fits great and performs flawlessly out in the hills.
I am trying to be a bit more healthy at the moment but, if it had to be anything, I would go for some chocolate cake.
Ski touring (no surprises!) and mountain biking. I grew up racing on dry slopes like many in Scotland; 10 years would pass before I started skiing consistently again, after spending two and a half years living and working in Whistler, BC. The more I ski, the more I enjoy touring to get away from the crowds and enjoy all the crazy conditions (good and bad) Scotland can throw at you. Bikes are cool too!
Mark’s favourite bit of kit in store
Any of the technical Arc’teryx pieces. Especially the new Lithic Comp jacket with its hybrid mix of Gore and softshell materials: perfect for all the mixed conditions, when you are working up a sweat! There is an amazing amount of work that goes into every Arc’teryx design!
Mark’s favourite cake
Gran Robertson’s Tiffin! Nothing comes close…
